Essential oils can help repel ants from your home and overwhelm their sense of smell. Peppermint, tea tree, and citrus oils provide the most powerful repellent effects against them. "It disrupts their navigation system and affects their communication," in lower concentrations.

Peppermint Oil

  • Overwhelms ants' sensory receptors effectively
  • Use 15 drops per cup (240ml) water
  • Apply near windows and door thresholds
  • Refresh every 2-3 days for best results

Tea Tree Oil

  • Disrupts chemical communication trails
  • Mix 10 drops per cup (240ml) water
  • Target baseboards and cabinet interiors
  • Avoid use around cats and infants

Citrus Oils

  • Lemon and orange oils dissolve ant trails
  • Combine 20 drops with 1 cup (240ml) water
  • Apply along counter edges and sinks
  • Reapply after cleaning surfaces

Always keep the mixture at a maximum of 5 percent strength. Otherwise, either damage to the surface or danger to health would occur. Test oils for staining properties on a patch that will not show; wood finishes and porous stones should not be used at all. Store in a dark bottle and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Blend oils for potency. Create combinations such as peppermint-lemon or tea tree-orange, or combine 10 drops peppermint with 10 drops lemon per cup (240ml) of water to spray along the ants' trail. Replenish these blends every 48 hours if the ants persist.

Mandatory precautions protect your family. Never use the oil undiluted around pets. Never use any of the treatments that children can reach. Ensure sufficient ventilation during use. Wear gloves to shield your skin from irritants.

Spray oil treatments at the entry points once you've identified the trail at daybreak. Within a few hours, if the ants are gone, you can monitor whether they have left the treated areas. If not, treat them again. Be consistent, and you'll see "reliable results" within 72 hours.
