What toxin is in larkspur?

The toxin in larkspur is not one single chemical. The plant carries a mix of more than 40 larkspur alkaloids. How strong that mix gets depends on the species, the site, and the growth stage. The one that does the real harm is methyllycaconitine. That compound blocks the nerve signals your muscles need, and even a small dose can drop a full-grown cow.

Chemists sort these compounds into two camps. The deadly group is the MSAL-type, and methyllycaconitine leads that group. For larkspur to poison cattle, an MSAL-type toxin has to be there in the plant. The other group, the non-MSAL type, is much weaker and does little harm by itself. You may see three more toxins named on a warning list, and these go by delphinine, ajacine, and deltaline.

Not every larkspur packs the same punch. Tall larkspurs of the high mountains hold the most toxin, while some low and plains types stay milder. The same plant also shifts through the year. Levels tend to run high in early growth, drop as the plant matures, then climb again in the flowers and pods. This is why one patch can sicken a herd while a patch down the road does nothing.

Every part of larkspur is poisonous, but the poison is not the same in every part. New spring shoots and the seeds hold the highest load of these toxins. If you grow larkspur, treat the young leaves and the seed pods as the parts to fear most. Most of the named larkspur alkaloids on record come from tall larkspurs. These grow in the mountains of the western United States. That is where Texas A&M AgriLife Extension traces most of the known toxins.

When Larkspur Turns Deadly

Toxin levels rise and fall with the seasons, so timing is everything. The plant hits peak danger during about five weeks, from first bloom until the seed pods split open. If you keep cattle, keep the herd off larkspur ground through that whole window.

This matters whether you keep livestock or just grow the plant near pets. The larkspur alkaloids jam the link between nerve and muscle. An animal grows weak, goes down, and can die when the breathing muscles quit. There is no proven cure once a cow takes in a heavy dose. Cattle losses on western range land can reach 15%, so ranchers watch these plants with real care. The best a rancher can do is keep the animal calm and hope the dose was small.

The signs show up fast once an animal eats enough. You may see muscle tremors, a wide stance, staggering, then collapse. Bloat often follows because the gut muscles stall along with the rest. Death can come within hours of a big meal of the plant. That speed is what makes larkspur such a feared range weed.

People and pets face the same danger from the same toxins. Every part counts as poison to humans, cats, dogs, and horses. A single seed pod holds enough toxin to make a small dog sick. Kids can get sick from chewing a seed pod or a bright flower. So keep the plant out of reach and teach children to look, not taste. Wash your hands after you cut the stems for a vase.

You can still grow larkspur in your yard and stay safe. The plant looks harmless in a cottage border, and the tall blue spikes earn a spot in many gardens. But the same diterpenoid alkaloids that kill range cattle sit in the garden types too. Put larkspur where animals and small children cannot reach the seeds. Cut the spent flower heads before the pods form if pets roam your beds. Respect the plant that much, and you get the color with none of the risk.
