How often should I water radishes?

Watering is one of the most important aspects of producing crisp flavored radishes: When they do not get enough moisture, the roots are prone to cracking and becoming woody. However, over watering will produce rotten roots. Through experience, I have found that failing to give the roots just the right amount of moisture spells disaster. But if the following directions for watering are faithfully adhered to, you can rely upon the harvest being safe.

Moisture Monitoring

  • Insert finger to first knuckle daily
  • Soil should feel like damp sponge
  • Use moisture meters for accuracy
  • Check early morning before evaporation

Application Methods

  • Drip irrigation for slow deep penetration
  • Soaker hoses prevent leaf wetting
  • Watering cans with rose nozzles for seedlings
  • Avoid overhead sprinklers causing soil crust

Problem Prevention

  • Mulch with straw to retain moisture
  • Create drainage in clay soils
  • Water before heat peaks at 10 AM
  • Group plants by water needs

Daily attention required. Mist soil gently each morning and keep the top 1.3 cm ( ½ in.) damp with a fine mist. I use a spray bottle on delicate seedlings. This keeps the seed from drying while encouraging it to germinate. Keeping the soil constantly moist ensures that as many seeds as possible will sprout.

Established plants require 1 inch/2.5 cm of water weekly. Gauge the actual rain; suppose that a week's worth of water is more than enough. By tipping a side container, wash accordingly. I give them deep soaks once or often twice a week, especially in hot weather; it pushes the roots down, while a mere shower encourages weak roots close to the surface.

Use finger testing to prevent overwatering and underwatering! Insert your index finger about 1 inch deep into the soil next to your houseplants. The soil should feel cool and slightly sticky. This is a common rule of thumb, and it's the technique I recommend to my gardening students. It's the most fail-proof of all for home growers!

Watering schedules should reflect the climate. When the temperature rises above 85°F (29°C), increase your watering frequency. If a cool, wet period appears in the forecast, water less. I make adjustments based on the forecast each week. Making these smart, adaptive choices prevents plant stress due to over-watering and/or disease problems caused by excessive moisture/prolonged wetness.
