Vinegar alone will not kill weeds, however, because it only affects the surface foliage. The acetic acid burns the leaves but doesn't reach the deeper roots, and perennials like thistle can easily regrow from the roots that have survived the treatment. I learned this after a week, when my dandelions had returned. You need repeated applications.

Surface-Level Action

  • Vinegar burns only visible plant parts without penetrating roots
  • Root crowns survive underground to sprout new growth
  • Waxy leaf coatings resist absorption on mature weeds

Root Resilience

  • Perennial weeds store energy in taproots for regeneration
  • Dandelions regrow from 1-inch root fragments left in soil
  • Bindweed networks spread through underground rhizomes

Reapply the vinegar solutions every 3 to 5 days during dry sunny weather. This will further exhaust the reserves in the roots of the weeds. Treat any new growth as soon as it appears. I actually keep a calendar entry to remind myself or put notes on my phone to plan follow-up sprays. This way, you will continue to weaken them week after week!

Combine vinegar with mulching for persistent control. Cover the terrain with cardboard or wood chips. This denies weeds sunlight, preventing them from regrowing. Drop corn gluten meal early to stop the seeds from germinating. I layer these options in my veggie patch, as it creates a barrier of barriers to prevent further outbreaks.

Use boiling water on deep-rooted weeds that have sprouted in the cracks of pavements. It penetrates deeper than vinegar. Pour it at the point where the root crowns emerge, once a week. I use this in conjunction with my vinegar. You are working on different types of weeds with allied methods.

Despite restrictions, vinegar shines as a quick weed solution. No chemical tainting of your soil. And when sprayed at dawn, you protect pollinators. I can live with the reapplications necessary in organic gardening. You get to keep your yard toxin-free.
