Ground planting is most effective in warmer climates and soils with good depth. Containers benefit cooler-climate gardeners and/or gardeners with limited space. I grow in both methods every year.

Planting dill in the ground allows its roots to dig deep on their own. Once planted and established, it will require less watering than planting in containers. It is best to prepare the garden beds with loose soil that has compost integrated into it. We recommend spacing the plants approximately 12 inches apart to allow for adequate air circulation and growth. Dill has a delicate taproot, so it's best to avoid transplanting if possible.
Containers provide versatility for dill growing. Select a pot with a depth of at least 12 inches and holes for drainage. Use a high-quality potting mix and add a small amount of perlite. Rotate the pots every day to distribute the sun evenly. I put mine on wheels so I can move them around easily.
Keep dill wherever you decided to plant it, water when the top layer of soil dries out. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month. Pay attention to aphids, particularly on a container plant. Harvest frequently to encourage bushier growth in the plant. Regular harvesting will also assist in preventing the plant from bolting.
