Do beans need frequent watering?

Correctly watering your beans can determine whether you have a crop or a plant failure! How many people water them every day throughout the season? Stuff them! I know by experience that watering them deeply infrequently produces the best quality plants. I hope you understand your conditions and follow that trend.

Soil Moisture Management

  • Check moisture at 5 cm (2 in) depth with probe
  • Water only when top 2.5 cm feels dry
  • Use mulch to reduce evaporation by 30%

Problem Solving

  • Yellow leaves indicate overwatering
  • Wilting at noon signals under-watering
  • Cracked soil requires immediate soaking

Rinse and repeat should be adjusted for the type of soil you have. Sandy soils may require 20% more water but necessitate fewer intervals. Clay soils are half as frequent, but they need to be checked for soil moisture regularly. I put compost in the sand and create raised beds to improve drainage in clay soil.

Time watering perfectly. Opt for customized watering schedules for maximum efficiency. Water at dawn when the temperature is still low. Never water in the evening, as it may encourage fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. If a hot spell with temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit is forecasted, water your plants lightly at both dusk and dawn to prevent undue stress overnight.

Use efficient methods of irrigation. Drip systems deliver small quantities of water directly to the roots, where it is needed, with minimal waste. Soaker hoses are good if your plants are in rows. I usually put emitters about 15 cm away from plant stems. Overhead sprinklers should only be used at dawn to allow leaves to dry off.

Identify drought stress immediately. The beans will curl the leaves vertically to reduce their exposure to the hot sun. You may also notice the earth pulling away from the base of the stem. Water deeply immediately, and if detected early, your crop should recover pleasantly within a few hours and sustain no permanent damage.
