Overview
Pin oak is one of the easiest oaks to grow and one of the fastest, which is why it turns up shading so many lawns and streets across the eastern states. It belongs to the red oak group and reaches 50 to 70 feet (15 to 21 m) tall, carrying a straight central trunk and a broad pyramid of branches. The lower limbs sweep down toward the ground, the middle ones reach straight out, and the upper ones point to the sky, a layered look that sets the tree apart even in winter.
What people plant it for is the autumn show. The deeply cut leaves turn a deep red to bronze and hang on well into the cold, and young trees often keep dead leaves through winter, a habit called marcescence. Native to wet bottomlands, the tree shrugs off soggy ground and even brief flooding once it is settled in, which makes it a sound pick for a low, damp corner of the yard.
The one real catch is soil. Pin oak wants acidic ground and turns sickly and yellow on alkaline sites, so check your pH before you dig the hole. Give it the right soil, full sun, and room for that wide crown to spread, and it grows fast and asks for very little after that.
Care

Pin oak wants full sun, a good six hours or more a day, to grow fast and color well in fall. It will put up with partial shade, but a crowded or shaded tree grows thin and leggy and never makes the show it should.

Young trees need steady watering through their first few seasons while the roots take hold, then again in any real drought. Once settled, the tree handles consistently moist ground and even short spells of flooding, since it comes from wet bottomlands.

This is the part that decides everything. Pin oak needs moist, acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5, and it adapts to clay or sand as long as the ground isn't limy. Plant it on alkaline soil and the leaves yellow with iron chlorosis, so test before you dig.

Humidity
Ordinary outdoor humidity suits it, so there's no number to manage. The tree is far more particular about wet feet and soil pH than about the air around it.
Feeding
An established pin oak rarely needs feeding. On alkaline soil, the useful treatment isn't a general fertilizer but iron chelate or elemental sulfur to lower the pH and clear up chlorosis, applied in early spring.
Pruning
Prune in late winter to early spring while the tree is dormant, taking out dead, damaged, or crossing branches. The low limbs sweep toward the ground and can be limbed up for clearance, but hold off pruning from April through July in oak-wilt country to keep from drawing in beetles.

Pin oak is a landscape tree, not a long-term container plant. Pot up nursery seedlings each year until they go in the ground, where the tree spends the rest of its life.

Browned, scorched leaf margins that worsen year after year
When the scorch creeps in from the leaf edges, often behind a thin yellow band, and comes back worse each summer, suspect bacterial leaf scorch from Xylella fastidiosa. There is no cure once a tree is infected, so the work shifts to keeping it comfortable with steady water and mulch, then pruning out the limbs in steep decline. A lab test settles whether you are looking at the bacterium or plain drought stress.

Sudden wilting and bronzing that can kill in one season

The surest guard is to keep saws off your oaks from April through July, when fresh wounds draw the beetles in.

Yellow leaves with green veins, worst on new growth
This is iron chlorosis, and on pin oak it almost always traces back to soil that is too alkaline rather than to a missing nutrient. Lower the pH with elemental sulfur for a lasting fix, or reach for iron chelate when you need color back fast.

Knobby or horned woody lumps along the twigs

Pin oak earns its keep as a shade tree, but the acorns, buds, and young leaves carry tannins that are toxic when eaten. A cat that gnaws an acorn or a fallen leaf may drool, vomit, or go off its food for a day. Cats rarely eat enough to do real harm, but the tannins still upset the gut.

Dogs are the ones most likely to crunch up fallen acorns, which brings on vomiting, diarrhea, and a lost appetite. A whole acorn can also lodge in the gut, so keep an eye out if a small dog has been raiding the lawn.

Cattle, sheep, and goats can be poisoned when they fill up on acorns or buds, and a heavy feed leads to kidney failure that proves fatal. Hungry stock on bare pasture are most at risk, so clear them from oaks during a big acorn drop.

Many wild birds shell and eat acorns with no trouble, but the raw tannins are still hard on the gut, so this is no safe treat for pet or backyard birds.
People Caution
Nobody eats raw acorns, which are bitter and astringent from the tannins, and swallowing them can churn the stomach. Traditional acorn flour is only safe after the tannins are leached out with repeated rinsing.

Varieties
Most pin oaks sold are the straight species, but a couple of named forms exist for spots where the spreading, drooping habit causes problems.

Most pin oaks come up from acorns, but the seed needs a cold, damp rest of about 30 to 45 days to break dormancy. Gather ripe acorns in fall and either sow them outdoors right away or chill them before a spring sowing. The work is done under glass in late winter, and the union knits together over a single growing season. It takes a skilled hand, which is why these forms cost more than a plain seedling oak.
Myths
Pin oak is named for its pin-like persistent lower branches.
The name more likely points to the many small, slender dead twigs and stubs left behind when shaded lower branches die back. The tree does keep its drooping lower limbs, and young ones hold onto dead leaves all winter, a trait called marcescence. The pins are the spur-like dead twigs, not the living branches.
Yellow leaves on pin oak mean the tree needs more fertilizer or water.
Leaves that pale between green veins are almost always iron chlorosis, brought on by high soil pH that locks iron away from the roots. Pouring on general fertilizer or extra water does nothing for it. The real fix is lowering the pH or adding iron, not feeding the tree harder.
