Overview
The almond is a deciduous tree in the rose family, a close cousin of the peach and apricot, grown for the seed inside its stone rather than for a fleshy fruit. It hails from western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean and has long made its home in dry, sunny climates. What you crack open and eat is the kernel of a drupe, not a true nut at all.
This is a tree for warm, Mediterranean-style gardens, hardy through USDA zones 7 to 9. It blooms earlier than almost anything else in the orchard, often in February or March, and that head start is its weakness. A late frost can wipe out the flowers and the whole season's crop with them, so a frost-free bloom matters more than almost any other factor.
Almonds ask for patience and care, which is why they sit on the demanding end of the scale. Most named varieties can't set nuts on their own and need a second tree blooming at the same time to pollinate them. Pruning
Prune in the dormant season, in winter, training the tree to an open-center vase shape. Take out dead, crossing, and weak wood, and thin the canopy so light reaches the fruiting wood inside.
Repotting
Almonds aren't really container trees and field-grown trees are never repotted. If you do start one in a pot, don't hold it too long, or the roots circle and the tree stalls and dies back once planted out.

Tunneled kernels full of webbing and frass at harvest
This is the navel orangeworm, the worst pest an almond grower faces. The larvae bore into the nuts as the hulls split, and old mummy nuts left in the tree from last year are where the trouble starts. Clean those mummies out over winter, then treat at hull split and again 2 to 3 weeks later if pressure runs high.

Blossoms browning and dropping after a cold snap
Almonds bloom earlier than almost any fruit tree, so a late freeze catches the flowers wide open and kills the pistils, which turn brown or black inside. That loss of bloom means a thin crop. Protect high-risk nights with wind machines or irrigation, plant where cold air drains away, and lean toward later-blooming varieties on frosty sites.

Shoots and leaves dying back as the hulls split

Browned blossoms and oozing twig cankers during bloom
Wet weather at bloom lets brown rot blossom blight infect the open flowers, which then collapse brown and cling to the spur while small cankers gum on the twigs. Time a fungicide to the flower stage, around pink bud and full bloom, and cut out the blighted spurs and mummies you find.

Toxicity
Treat this tree with real caution around animals. The leaves, bark, green hulls, and the kernels of bitter almond all hold amygdalin, which releases cyanide, and the stone fruit's high fat and whole nuts add choking and pancreatitis risk for pets. The sweet almonds people eat are safe, but keep livestock, horses, and pets away from the foliage and prunings.

Cats Mild
A few sweet almonds usually bring on vomiting, diarrhea, and an upset stomach. The real danger is the bitter kernels and the foliage, which can trigger cyanide signs like drooling, widened pupils, and labored breathing.
Dogs Mild
Dogs tend to bolt nuts whole, so expect vomiting and diarrhea, a bout of pancreatitis from all that fat, or even a choking or blockage. Bitter almonds and any green plant parts push it further into cyanide territory.
Horses Toxic
The cyanide in wilted leaves and bark hits a horse hard, with rapid breathing, staggering, bright red gums, and collapse coming on fast. Keep horses well away from prunings and fallen branches.
Rabbits Toxic
A rabbit's small body has little margin for the amygdalin in almond leaves and twigs, and even a nibble can turn dangerous. Don't let them browse the foliage at all.
Livestock Toxic
Cattle, goats, and sheep that graze the leaves or chew the bark can take in enough cyanide to cause sudden, severe poisoning. Fence the trees off and clear any dropped prunings from the pasture.
Birds Toxic
Cyanide is acutely toxic to birds, so the green hulls, foliage, and bitter kernels are off limits for backyard poultry and pet birds alike.
People Caution
Sweet almonds from the store are low in cyanide and safe to eat. Bitter almonds are a different matter, holding enough amygdalin to be genuinely poisonous raw, which is why they aren't sold for raw eating.

Varieties
Almond varieties are sorted as much by their bloom timing and shell as by flavor, since most need a partner to set nuts. These are the ones worth knowing by name.
Nonpareil
The leading California cultivar prized for its thin, smooth shells that crack open with ease, though it sets no nuts without a cross-pollinizer nearby.
Carmel
A soft-shell variety that blooms right alongside Nonpareil, which is why it gets planted with it so often as a pollinizer.
Monterey
