Overview
White fir is a true fir from the mountains of the western United States, and it has become a favorite shade and specimen tree far beyond its home range. It carries a tidy pyramidal shape and soft blue-green to silvery-blue needles that set it apart from spruce and pine. Grown well it can stand for a very long time, since this is a slow, long-lived perennial evergreen.
Of the firs people plant in gardens, white fir is among the most forgiving. It puts up with cold down to -40°F (-40°C), shrugs off heat better than most of its relatives, and tolerates city air and clay where other firs sulk. The catch is wet feet. White woolly tufts on the bark with swollen, knotted joints
Those waxy white masses are the balsam woolly adelgid, a tiny sap feeder that settles on the bark and branch nodes. Myths
Douglas fir is a true fir, the same as white, Fraser, and balsam fir.
Douglas-fir belongs to the genus Pseudotsuga and is not a true fir at all. True firs in the genus Abies hold their seed cones upright on the branch and let them crumble apart in place, and their needles join the twig by a flat, round base that leaves the bark smooth. Douglas-fir cones hang down, fall whole, and show three-pointed bracts, while spruces leave little woody pegs where their needles drop.
