Overview
Camellia sinensis is the shrub that every cup of tea starts with. It belongs to the camellia family and grows slowly into a dense evergreen, with glossy leaves and small fragrant white flowers that open in fall and carry into early winter. Left alone it can reach the size of a small tree, but most growers keep it low and bushy.
It thrives in acidic, organically rich soil and a spot with part shade, though it will take more sun where the ground stays moist. Hardiness runs from zone 6 to zone 9 depending on the type, so the right variety can shrug off real winter cold. Slow and steady is the rhythm here, and a plant rewards a few years of patience.
The draw is the harvest. Pick the young leaves and buds in spring, then process them at home, and a single shrub turns into green, white, oolong, or black tea depending on how you treat the leaf. Keep the soil acidic and evenly moist, and one plant can supply you for decades.

Light
Tea plants do best in part shade, which mimics the dappled light of their forest origins. They tolerate part to full sun where the soil stays reliably moist, but harsh, dry sun stresses the leaves and the buds.
Water
Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, since soggy roots invite rot. A 2 to 3 inch mulch holds moisture between waterings, and a dry summer spell is what makes the flower buds drop, so don't let it run thirsty in the heat.
Soil
This is an acid lover that needs organically rich, well-drained loam with a pH of 5.0 to 6.0. Work in plenty of organic matter, and watch for yellowing leaves as the sign the ground has crept too alkaline.
Temperature
The plant is tough across a wide range, taking temperatures from 0°F to 100°F (-18°C to 38°C) once established. The hardier Chinese type handles the cold end better than the tender Assam type.
Humidity
Ordinary outdoor humidity suits it, so there's no target to hit. Good airflow matters more, since still, damp air around crowded leaves is what helps scale and flower blight take hold.
Feeding
Feed lightly in spring with an acid-forming azalea or camellia fertilizer. One seasonal application is enough for this slow grower, and a soil test tells you whether the plant needs more.
Pruning
Prune after flowering to shape the shrub, and for a steady leaf harvest cut it back to 4 to 5 feet just before spring growth to push fresh shoots. Hard cutbacks are safe from late winter into early May.
Repotting
A container plant needs moving up roughly every 3 years. Repot when you see roots circling or slipping out the drainage holes, growth slowing, or the plant simply outgrowing its pot.

Troubleshooting
Most tea plant trouble shows on the leaves, the flowers, or the roots, and the wet, mild conditions camellias enjoy are the same ones that favor pests and fungus. Read the early signs below and match them before a problem spreads through the shrub.
The whole shrub yellows, stalls, and wilts
When a plant yellows all over and slides into decline after a wet spell, suspect Phytophthora root rot. Dig down and check the roots, which turn red-brown to dark brown instead of staying white. There's no cure once it's set in, so pull badly hit plants, fix the drainage with raised beds, and protect the survivors with a mefenoxam drench.
Fix:
- Improve drainage and avoid waterlogged sites; use raised beds
- Remove severely affected plants since fungicides will not cure established infection
- Apply mefenoxam preventatively to protect remaining healthy plants
Yellow blotches on top with cottony white crust underneath
This is tea scale, an armored sap-sucker that settles on the underside of the leaves and shows itself through yellow patches above. Turn a leaf over and you'll find the dark females and smaller white males packed into a cottony mat. Scrape or prune off light patches, then hit the plant with horticultural oil in late winter and insecticidal soap once the crawlers are moving.
Fix:
- Hand-scrape or prune out lightly infested leaves
- Apply 2% horticultural oil in late winter to early spring
- Use insecticidal soap during crawler activity
- Apply systemic dinotefuran or contact acephate/bifenthrin for heavy infestations
Brown blotches that swallow the whole flower in a day
This is camellia petal blight, a fungus that browns a bloom from a few small spots in 24 to 48 hours. The dark veins running through the ruined petals tell it apart from simple cold damage. Pick off and destroy every infected flower, rake up the fallen ones, and refresh the mulch so the fungus has nowhere to overwinter.
Fix:
- Promptly remove and destroy all infected flowers
- Rake up fallen blooms and debris and replace surface mulch
- Apply mancozeb sprays or soil drenches in late December through January where blight is established
Yellow leaves with the veins still green
When the leaf yellows but the veins stay green, the plant is showing chlorosis, almost always because the soil has drifted too alkaline for this acid lover to pull up iron. A magnesium shortage can do the same. Test the soil, then push the pH back down and add iron chelate, saving Epsom salt only for a confirmed magnesium gap.
Fix:
- Lower soil pH toward acidic range for this acid-loving plant
- Apply iron chelate to correct iron-related chlorosis
- Apply Epsom salt solution (1 tablespoon per gallon) if magnesium deficiency is confirmed by soil test
Toxicity
This is the plant tea comes from, and the picked leaves are safe and good for people. The catch is the caffeine. Fresh leaves can mildly upset cats, dogs, and horses if they eat a fair amount, and brewed tea, tea bags, and dried leaves are far more dangerous to pets than the living shrub. Keep all of those out of an animal's reach.

Cats Mild
The fresh leaves carry caffeine, so a cat that nibbles a lot may grow restless, drool, or get an upset stomach. Brewed tea and tea bags are the bigger danger, so keep those well out of reach.
Dogs Mild
A dog that chews more than a leaf or two can turn jittery, pant, and bring up its food from the caffeine. Dried leaves and a forgotten mug of tea pack the most punch, so clear them away.
Horses Mild
Grazing on a quantity of the leaves can leave a horse wound up and off its feed because of the caffeine. Most horses leave the bitter shrub alone, but it's worth fencing off from a bored one.
Rabbits Caution
There's no clear safety record for rabbits eating tea leaves, and the caffeine gives no reason to risk it. Keep the plant and any dried leaves away from them.
Livestock Caution
Cattle, goats, and sheep usually pass over the bitter foliage, but a hungry animal eating a lot could feel the caffeine. Fence it off where stock graze close.
Birds Caution
Birds are small and react sharply to caffeine, so keep them away from the leaves and never near brewed tea. Treat the shrub as off limits for pet birds.

Varieties
Tea splits into two main types of plant, and which one you grow decides both how much cold it takes and what kind of tea its leaves are best for.
Camellia sinensis var. sinensis
The small-leaved Chinese type is the cold-hardy one, holding on into USDA zone 6, and its tender young leaves and buds make green and white tea.
Camellia sinensis var. assamica
The large-leaved Assam type from northern India is tender by comparison, suited to zone 7 and south, and its older leaves go into oolong and black tea.

Myths
The tea plant is the same as the showy garden camellias.
They share a genus but not a species. Camellia sinensis is grown for the leaves you brew and carries smaller fall flowers, while C. japonica and C. sasanqua are planted for their big ornamental blooms. The garden camellias are not where tea comes from.
