Overview

Japanese pieris, often called andromeda, is a broadleaf evergreen shrub in the Ericaceae family, the same clan as rhododendrons and azaleas. It earns its keep in early spring, when long, drooping clusters of white urn-shaped flowers open like tiny lily-of-the-valley bells. The glossy leaves stay on all year, and the new growth flushes a striking bronze-red before it settles to dark green.

It grows slowly into a sizable shrub, reaching 9 to 12 feet (2.7 to 3.7 m) tall and 6 to 8 feet (183 to 244 cm) wide over many years. Hardy through USDA zones 5 to 8, it wants the same conditions its rhododendron cousins do: rich, acidic, evenly moist soil and a spot out of harsh sun and wind. Get the site right and it asks for very little after that.

One thing to know before you plant it: every part of this shrub is poisonous. The leaves, flowers, nectar, and pollen all carry grayanotoxins, so it's a poor choice where pets, livestock, or small children spend time near it.

Care

The short version: partial shade with shelter from wind, rich acidic soil kept evenly moist but never soggy, and an acid-forming feed in early spring after the flowers fade.

Light

Andromeda does best in partial shade. It will take full sun in cooler climates and tolerates more shade, but harsh afternoon sun scorches the leaves and invites lace bugs, so give it some afternoon cover.

Water

Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained, watering more often in heat and while the plant is settling in. Never let it dry out completely, and never let it sit in waterlogged ground, which brings on phytophthora root rot.

Soil

This shrub demands rich, acidic, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter, ideally a pH between 4.5 and 6.0. Like its rhododendron relatives, it simply won't thrive in alkaline ground.

Temperature

Hardy from -20°F to 86°F (-29°C to 30°C), it handles cold winters across zones 5 to 8 without trouble. Its weak point is drying winter wind and sun rather than cold itself.

Humidity

Ordinary outdoor humidity suits it fine, so there's no number to chase. What matters more is shelter from drying wind, which scorches the evergreen leaves faster than any dry air.

Feeding

Feed once a year in early spring, right after bloom, using an acid-forming fertilizer made for rhododendrons and azaleas. That single seasonal feeding keeps the leaves green and the soil on the acidic side it needs.

Pruning

This shrub barely needs pruning. Snip off the spent flower clusters and cut away any dead or damaged wood, and do your shaping just after flowering, since next year's buds form on old wood by late summer.

Repotting

Andromeda is grown in the ground and rarely needs moving. If you do keep one in a container, repot only when roots circle the pot or water runs straight through, and always use a fresh acidic mix.

Troubleshooting

Most andromeda trouble traces back to the wrong site: too much sun, too much wind, or soil that stays wet. The leaves usually tell you first. Match what you see below, then fix the cause rather than just the symptom.

Severe

Branches wilting and dying back in wet, soggy ground

Wet feet are the danger here. Phytophthora root and crown rot sets in when the soil stays waterlogged, and the roots and stem bases turn dark while the top wilts and browns. Cut out the dead wood and bin it, fix the drainage, and stop overwatering. If the rot has taken hold, replant into a raised, well-drained acidic bed.

Knock light infestations off with a hard spray of water, treat the undersides with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, and move the plant into part shade where the pressure eases.

In horses the foliage brings on dullness, weakness, diarrhea, and colicky belly pain. The heartbeat turns slow or erratic, the animal may stop eating and drinking, and cardiac failure is the real danger.

Rabbits Severe

Rabbits are small enough that a little goes a long way, so never let one nibble the leaves or flowers. Expect a gut that shuts down, weakness, and a heartbeat thrown off by the same grayanotoxins that poison larger animals.

Livestock Severe

Grazing animals that strip the foliage drool and vomit, then weaken as the heart rhythm falters toward failure. Goats and sheep browsing a hedge are especially at risk, since a surprisingly small amount can be deadly.

Birds Severe

The grayanotoxins are no kinder to birds, where even small amounts can throw the heart into a dangerous rhythm. Keep poultry and pet birds well clear of the leaves, flowers, and dropped debris.
