What fertilizer prevents blossom end rot?

Choosing the right fertilizer prevents blossom end rot before it starts. Low-nitrogen formulas prevent plants from competing for calcium uptake. High nitrogen levels cause foliage to grow so rapidly that it starves the fruit of calcium. That's how I ruined my first crop using unbalanced plant food.

Use 5-10-10 NPK for best results. The low first number indicates less nitrogen, resulting in less leafy growth and more fruit. Apply at planting and again during the early flowering stage, and always follow package rates.

Avoid Ammonium-Based

  • Ammonium competes with calcium absorption
  • Causes rapid pH drops in soil
  • Damages root function over time

Calcium Integration

  • Mix gypsum into soil before planting
  • Add bone meal to planting holes
  • Use liquid calcium nitrate during fruiting

During bed preparation, add calcium-rich amendments, such as gypsum (two tablespoons per gallon of soil), or crushed eggshells or bone meal to the planting hole. These offer calcium to crops slowly throughout the growing season. I prepare this mix every spring.

Liquid calcium nitrate should be applied when the fruits are just starting to form. Mix one tablespoon per gallon of water, then use this as a soil drench every two weeks as a supplement to the calcium needed during that crucial growth stage. Foliar sprays will do the job if applied in time, but you want something that will last longer.

Select fertilizers that are slow-releasing to provide continuous nutrition for crops. Organic types, such as composted manure, release nutrients slowly over time. By doing so, they limit nutrient spikes, which can disrupt a plant's calcium balance. Additionally, I utilize these organic fertilizers in conjunction with monthly soil testing to achieve optimal performance.

Note down the types of fertilizers and dates of application for every season. Record the plant's responses and the quality of the fruit. Adjust according to your soil sample return. Consistent observation will ensure that you do not experience repeated issues. Your tomatoes will excel.
