You can treat root rot without repotting in emergencies. That's how I saved my pothos during a winter freeze - no repotting required! First, stop all watering immediately. Allow that soil to dry out completely. You want to make that soil an unfriendly environment for those fungi! Test the moisture daily with your finger.

Soil Surface Treatment

  • Remove top 1-2 inches of soil carefully
  • Expose upper roots to air for drying
  • Sprinkle cinnamon powder over exposed roots weekly
  • Replace soil only after recovery

Environmental Adjustments

  • Position fans to blow across soil surface
  • Maintain airflow for 6 hours daily
  • Increase room temperature to 75-80°F
  • Reduce humidity below 50% temporarily

Sprinkle cinnamon powder directly on the soil. Use about a teaspoon for a 6-inch pot. This works as a natural fungicide and can help slow the spread of the rot. Reapply after watering. While you do this, expose the roots by using a small knife to carefully scrape away the topsoil around the base of the stem, being careful not to injure any healthy roots.

Boost circulation around the roots. A small fan located on top of your pots, three feet away from it, and running for six hours a day will help to dry the soil out faster. Clip fans are also available for a potted plant. Increase the room temperature, but avoid placing the plant near a heater. The warmth will stimulate the roots to grow.

Keep a close watch on advance. After five days, assess progress for decreased wilting. After two weeks, new leaf growth should be visible. If conditions worsen after ten days, report immediately. All these are temporary repairs to correct the plant's condition; however, the plant will fully recover from repotting in due time.

Prepare to repot your plants eventually. You can use the methods above to create your soil and obtain your pots. After allowing your plants to stabilize, you will move them appropriately. Continue to keep prevention in mind by watering properly and ensuring adequate drainage. Your plants will continue to do well over time.
