Prof. Charles Hartman, Ph.D.For bushy tarragon plants, you will need to take specific measures that foster lateral growth. When tarragon plants seem leggy or less filled out, it is usually too little light or poor pruning. I know this firsthand, having tried them myself. After using these techniques, my plants, too, changed. Some of these techniques will result in compact growth and a higher overall harvest.
Using pinching a lot is a key component to achieving bushiness. During periods of active growth, gently squeeze 1-2 inches off the end of each stem with your thumb and forefinger, allowing the side shoots beneath the cut to grow. This should be done every 3 to 4 weeks. After pinching my plants consistently, they doubled their leaf density.
Pruning Methods
- Tip Removal: Pinch stem ends monthly
- Timing: Active growth phases only
- Tool Care: Use clean fingers or shears
Light Optimization
- Duration: Minimum 6 daily sunlight hours
- Quality: Direct morning light preferred
- Adjustments: Rotate containers weekly
Nutrient Management
- Fertilizer Type: Low-nitrogen formulas
- Application: Half-strength every 6 weeks
- Alternative: Compost tea for slow release
Provide adequate sunlight exposure for compact growing. Tarragon requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. Place plants where they receive morning sun for optimal growth. For those in pots or containers, rotate them to a 90-degree position each week for uniform exposure. My balcony plants became significantly bushier after starting a rotation.
It is best to avoid nitrogen-heavy fertilizers that promote vertical growth. Balanced 5-10-10 formulas are recommended. Apply half-strength every six weeks during the growing season and supplement with monthly compost tea. My plants stopped growing upward after I switched to a different fertilizer.
With container plants, it's a great idea to rotate them every week so they get light on all sides (to avoid one-sided growth). If they are light-weight, it's relatively easy to do. My potted tarragon ended up full and symmetrical from regular rotation. Terra cotta pots are great for easy rotation.
Employ these strategies for best results. Start pinching at the beginning of the season. Be strict about light management. Maintain a correct feeding schedule. Your plants will produce delicious aromatic leaves in abundance. I have a kitchen garden that now supplies tarragon year-round.
