Does okra require special soil preparation?

Optimal growing conditions for okra are slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.0. Add lime if the mixture is too acidic and sulfur if it is too alkaline. I test my soil every spring.
Texture Improvement

Nutrient Management
- Apply 2-3 inches of compost before tilling

Build raised beds to warm the soil more quickly. Raised beds 12 inches high and 3 feet wide make ample room. Fill with equal parts topsoil, compost, and coarse sand for good drainage and root penetration. I create raised beds in early spring to extend the growing season by two to three weeks.
Provide proper drainage in all soil types. Use French drainage in clay-heavy areas and mounds of earth 6 inches high above the plants in wet, shady situations. The annual addition of old hotbed manure to even the most dry and barren spots forms an excellent soil, but light, sandy ground should be avoided. Water that accumulates in the interior would form a bog and tend to paralyse and check growth.
Maintain healthy soil throughout the growing season. Mulch your plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Rotate your crops annually to prevent the accumulation of insect eggs and disease spores. Use clover as a cover crop in winter. Healthy soil means a stronger, disease-resistant plant.
