Can I grow sweet potatoes in containers?

Planting sweet potato containers is great for many backyard gardeners, but it works great for compact bush-only varieties like Vardaman or Porto Rico. You will grow full-sized tubers in a 10-gallon pot; I learned that myself last season when my patio harvest from the three containers resulted in 14 pounds of tuber total! Be sure your pots have drainage holes so that your plants' roots do not sit in water.

Container Selection

  • Minimum 10-gallon capacity per plant
  • Fabric pots improve airflow to roots
  • Dark-colored containers absorb heat for warmth
  • Ensure 3-4 drainage holes to prevent rot

Soil Mix Formula

  • 60% coconut coir for moisture retention
  • 30% coarse sand for drainage
  • 10% worm castings for nutrients
  • Mix in perlite to prevent compaction

Placement & Care

  • Full sun exposure (6+ hours daily)
  • Elevate pots for vine trailing space
  • Water when top 2 inches dry out
  • Rotate containers weekly for even growth

By being mindful of soil moisture, you can avoid common container mistakes when growing potatoes. Splitting tubers is commonly caused by over-watering. On the other hand, potatoes with very woody textures are caused by too little moisture. In 2023, I evaluated the use of self-watering containers, which decreased my workload by over 40% while simultaneously providing a controlled amount of moisture throughout the tuber formation times, resulting in higher yield.

Adjustments due to the seasons are key. When there are threats of early frost, take the pots inside using the grow lights. I overwintered three plants under the same conditions and had three further weeks of harvests. For a more aesthetically pleasing container garden, companion plants with nasturtiums to deter pests organically.
