Overview
Few sights match a wood floored with English bluebells in spring. The plant grows from a bulb and belongs to the asparagus family, sending up narrow strap leaves and a one-sided arching stem of fragrant violet-blue bells from April into May. It is hardy across zones 5 to 8 and asks for very little once it is in the ground.
Bluebells thrive in the dappled light under trees, the same part shade they get on a woodland floor, though they take full sun or deep shade as well. After the flowers fade, the leaves yellow and the whole plant slips into summer dormancy, resting underground until the next spring. Left alone in good soil, a small planting drifts outward year after year into a sweep of color.
The catch is that every part of this plant is toxic. The bulbs, leaves, flowers, and sap all carry cardiac glycosides, and the bulb is the most poisonous part of all. It is a plant to enjoy with your eyes, sited well clear of pets, grazing animals, and small children.

Light
Bluebells are happiest in the dappled part shade beneath deciduous trees, the same light they get on a woodland floor. They will also take full sun or full shade, but the soft light under a high canopy gives the best flowering and the most natural look.

Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained through the spring growing season, watering every 5 to 10 days when rain falls short. Once the foliage yellows and the bulb goes dormant in summer, the plant wants next to nothing and will rot in soggy ground.
