Which pests leave white markings on leaves?

Prof. Charles Hartman, Ph.D.White patterns on greenery usually start with pests. Of all the pests, spider mites get the most attention, a sign of trouble. Whiteflies, mealybugs, and thrips all leave a distinctive sign of the white phenomenon. Last summer, a client unexpectedly lost a fern because the whiteflies were not seen by the client, but they left behind a sticky residue. Start with a white pest inspection on the underside of plant leaves early in the morning.
Spider Mites
- Fine webbing between leaves
- Yellow-white stippling on surfaces
- Thrive in dry, dusty conditions
Mealybugs
- Cotton-like clumps near veins
- Honeydew secretion attracts ants
- Spread rapidly in warm climates
Thrips
- Silvery streaks with black specks
- Distorted new growth
- Active during hot, dry spells
Whiteflies
- Cloud of tiny flies when disturbed
- Pale yellow larvae under leaves
- Transmit viral diseases
Quarantine all new plants for two weeks to prevent infestations. When I recently received an orchid as a gift, I found thrips using this Girl Scout principle. Toward the end of each month, I wipe down the leaves with a diluted mixture of castile soap because all creatures love dust and, on occasion, spider mites. Finally, consider adding a few ladybugs for an organic plan - they can eat 50+ pests a day.
Resistant varieties lessen care concerns. For example, 'Defiant' phlox will repel spider mites, and 'Silver Queen' aglaonema can be resistant to mealybugs. Always look for plant tags and check for labels like "SM" (for spider mites) when you are purchasing plants, as well. These varieties were tested in a lab, and they will likely do just as well in your house plants if you use some basic care techniques.
Act quickly at first sight. A single female spider mite can lay 100 eggs per week. Either isolate the affected plants right away or simply toss the plants to contain the problem. I have a 72-hour rule. If I do not treat the plant within three days, I risk losing it. Be vigilant today and reap the reward of a harvest tomorrow.
