The outcome of zucchini production is highly dependent on the companion plants you use. Some plants aggressively compete for nutrients or space. Some share pests, creating a risk of infestation. I avoid these troublemaking neighbors by planting wisely in the garden. Your zucchini bed can flourish with the right mix of plants!

Potatoes are not good companions for zucchini since they require the same nutrients. Their root system is extensive and will starve neighboring plants. Pumpkins and melons draw in squash vine borers and cucumber beetles, which will quickly spread from related cucurbits. I keep the cucurbit family at least thirty feet apart.

  • Marigolds deter nematodes with root secretions
  • Borage repels tomato hornworms and cabbage worms
  • Garlic chives mask zucchini scent from pests

Utilize trap cropping to protect zucchini plants. Planting radishes or nasturtiums can be done in proximity to each other. Those two sacrificial plants will serve as a trap crop, diverting pests from the crops you want to protect. I place trap crops along the edges of my gardens. Throughout the season, the zucchini will not be bothered by pests.

Establishing advantageous plant communities for zucchini. Corn provides shade from excessive heat. Beans climb the corn stalks and fix nitrogen. This strategy is called the Three Sisters and utilizes space wisely. With this ancient method, I can attest to its effectiveness.

To avoid accumulation of disease, it is a good idea to rotate crops each year. Zucchini, for instance, should never be planted where you grew other cucurbits before. The best practice is to wait three years before planting back in the same location. I have detailed maps of my gardens. This practice also helps maintain the health of your soil.
