What pests commonly attack rutabaga plants?

Rutabagas confront an unyielding assault from three major pests that infest above and below, threatening both roots and leaves alike. My initial crop suffered catastrophic losses via cabbage maggots, and I learned a hard lesson about staying ahead of the needs of pest management - the difference between successful crops and wiped out harvests is often simply identifying the problem and responding early.

Flea Beetles

  • Shothole damage on leaves
  • Spread bacterial diseases
  • Apply kaolin clay spray weekly

Cabbage Root Maggots

  • Tunneling in root flesh
  • Larvae survive winter in soil
  • Use nematode drenches at planting

Aphid Colonies

  • Sticky honeydew on leaves
  • Transmit viral pathogens
  • Release ladybugs as natural predators

Preventative strategies are truly the most effective when dealing with soil-dwelling maggots. I currently line the trenches where I plant seedlings with food grade diatomaceous earth, in essence, giving the maggot larvae a lethal barrier across the trench. Along with crop rotation, this resulted in an 80% reduction in root damage in my test plots last season.

During early summer or during peak beetle activity, monitor the plants daily. To capture adult beetles before they lay their eggs, place yellow sticky traps about 6 inches above the soil. My records indicate that, when outbreaks occurred, I trapped as many as 120 beetles weekly and successfully prevented extensive leaf damage.

Aphid outbreaks call for immediate responses. I spray soap-oil mixtures (1 tbsp of dish soap + 1 cup of oil per gallon) at dawn when temperatures will not rise above 80°F. Spraying at that time ensures that pests will suffocate and that ladybugs will arrive by midmorning to clean up any still surviving aphids.
