Rabbits can wreck gardens in one evening. Getting protection is very important. Many gardeners are looking for homemade selections. Garlic and pepper spray are the most effective natural deterrents. I'm using this mix in my own garden, after trying others for years.
Mixing Ingredients
- Combine 2 tablespoons garlic powder with 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper
- Add 5 cups water and 1 teaspoon liquid castile soap
- Strain through cheesecloth to prevent nozzle clogs during spraying
Application Process
- Spray plant surfaces until dripping wet for maximum coverage
- Focus on new growth and ground-level stems rabbits target first
- Apply during cooler hours below 85°F to prevent leaf burn
Consistency is key to results. Reapply every three days when dry. Restore protection immediately after 0.25 inch of rainfall. Test on one leaf before applying the full amount. Sensitive plants may exhibit temporary wilting, but will recover in hours.
You can combine methods for improved effects. Garlic-pepper works nicely with physical barriers. I separate my vegetable beds with chicken wire fencing. Repellent along the fencing enhances protection. For me, this reduced rabbit damage by 90% in last season's garden.
Store the extra mixture correctly. Use dark glass bottles and keep them out of direct light. If refrigerated, potency is extended for 2 weeks. Always label containers to avoid accidents. And keep out of reach of children for safety.
