Should I wear protective gear when handling?

*Safety Equipment* is a must when working with vermiculite or perlite. Both materials create fine silica dust and are, therefore, considered respirator risks during the mixing process. I developed a choking cough at the beginning of my gardening experience before wearing proper protective gear. I learned never to forget protection.

Dust hazards pose the highest risk when being handled. Vermiculite and perlite contain silica crystals that scar lung tissue when inhaled. I typically monitor the wind direction before operating outdoors. Be sure to position yourself upwind to minimize exposure while mixing.

Material preparation significantly reduces the amount of airborne particles. Pre-moisten amendments until they hold their shape and do not drip. My 20% moisture content rule, applied to dehydrated material, will help combat dust while remaining workable. You should not use dry materials in any enclosed condition, even if there is ventilation.

Storage safety continues to protect the individual while handling. After the residue has been cleared, secure the containers thoroughly to limit the risk of accidental dust escape. Clearly label the containers to warn of hazards. I keep mine in a locked cabinet designated for their storage, and away from inhabited spaces.

Consistent practices ensure long-term health. N95 masks should be replaced after eight hours of use. Wash protective clothing separately from regular clothing. Weekly safety checks guarantee the integrity of all equipment/documents. Do not compromise safety, regardless of the task's magnitude.
