So where did the 80,000-year number come from? It was never pinned down by hard genetic data. It spread as a rough, headline-friendly guess. You will still see the number on old signs and in textbooks today. One extra worry hangs over the grove now. Hungry deer and elk keep browsing the young shoots, so few new stems survive to grow tall and replace the old ones.
Treat any single Pando age number with caution, including the ones you read here. The science is still moving, and the next study could shift the range again as methods improve.
