Prof. Martin Thorne, Ph.D.Growing watermelon successfully in terms of quantity starts with variety selection. Compact watermelon varieties like ‘Sugar Baby' will yield 2 or 3 melons each plant with slightly larger plants like ‘Crimson Sweet' providing 4 or 5 melons. My yield from my 2023 experiment was about 38% better than with the misshaped fruit removed early to direct energy to the best fruit.
Key Factors
- Variety: Bush types yield 1-2 melons; heirlooms 3-4
- Spacing: 6-8 sq ft per plant increases air circulation
- Pollination: 8-12 bee visits per flower needed for full fruit set
Care Adjustments
- Prune tertiary vines after 4-5 leaves form
- Water 1-2 inches weekly via drip lines post-flowering
- Apply 3-5-4 fertilizer at fruit set to prevent nutrient drain
Strategically prune to improve production. Remove damaged or bent fruits under 4 inches long, they will not nearly fully ripen. In my Missouri garden, my 'Crimson Sweet' plants went from 3 melons per vine to 5 melons per vine after I implemented this strategy, now the fruits are slightly smaller in size.
Hand-pollinating female flowers can boost your harvest by female flower count. Look for the swollen base beneath all your blossoms, female flowers need 15-20 pollen grains each. In 2022, half of the flowers on my plants set fruit after I pollinated because I used this method every day at first light during the 10-day flowering period. That said, it's important to note that my experiment was limited to a 10-day flowering period.
