I wish I could say I had a great success rate judging muscari and their longevity in our home, but the pots are monitored daily to maximize longevity. When temperatures are cooler, the aging process slows down significantly, and petals in heat will drop quickly. Start with lush green and tight buds, and avoid tulips with fully open flowers.
Temperature Management

Light Optimization
- Provide bright indirect light from east-facing windows

Timing of purchase impacts possible display length. Select pots with mostly closed buds that are starting to show color. Avoid drooping petals and yellowed leaves. I check stems for firmness. A healthy tulip stands upright without any support. Check soil moisture levels before purchase - over-saturated media indicates a likely poor care history.
Environmental stressors ensure that blooms live very short lives! Ethylene gas from ripe fruit causes premature wilting. Keep tulips away from any kitchen counter holding produce. Many drafts from doors or windows result in moisture loss. I utilize humidity trays, filled with pebbles and water, to achieve an ambient humidity of 40-50%.
After the bulbs' flowers have died back, the bulbs will recover for outdoor planting with proper post-bloom care. For the bulbs to heal properly, continue watering until the foliage is completely dry. After flowering, I've moved pots into cool garages. After blooming, and for 4 weeks afterwards, I fertilize with a half-strength bulb fertilizer. In zones 3 through 7, bulbs can be planted outdoors in the spring, once the danger of frost has passed. Patience is key, and recovery typically takes 1-2 years before the plant reblooms.
Display rotation maximizes overall enjoyment. Store backup pots in a cool, dark space at 35 - 40°F. As old blooms fade, replace them with new containers. I like to stagger purchases by 2 weeks for continuous color. Mix tulips with like-spring bulb companions, such as muscari, for layered displays.
