Extending Your Lettuce Harvest Season Let your growing season be guided by the climate. There are ways to plan and ensure you can enjoy homegrown lettuce throughout the year, beyond May and June when it's typically available. Succession planting and cold protection are two effective methods to achieve this; I've been enjoying fresh greens throughout winter by applying these techniques to lettuce growth, and you can too. Plant varieties suited to your region.

Cold Frame Management

  • Temperature Range: Maintains 5-10°C (41-50°F) above outdoor
  • Ventilation: Open on days above 10°C (50°F)
  • Placement: South-facing slope for maximum sun exposure

Hydroponic Systems

  • Light Requirements: 12-14 hours daily at 200-400 µmol/m²/s
  • Nutrient Solution: EC 1.2-1.8 mS/cm, pH 5.5-6.0
  • Production Cycle: 3-4 weeks from seed to harvest

With proper frost protection

Once you have consecutive harvests each week, "succession planting," you add 3-4 months to your harvest calendar. Sow seeds every 14 days. For spring, plant your first seedlings as soon as the soil temperature reaches at least 4°C (39°F). For fall crops, 8 weeks before your first frost. If doing summer successions, choose heat-tolerant romaine varieties.

Build effective cold frames with 30° sides, aimed southerly with the direct sun overhead when plantings begin. Place them against thick north walls for protection from chilling winds, particularly in zones 5-7. Covered with 30-50g/m² fabric for frost protection to -4 °C (25°F). My plants produce greens through December snows.

Utilize hydroponics to grow indoors, incorporating either a Deep Water Culture (DWC) or Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) method. Use indoor air temperatures of between 18°C and 21°C (65°F and 70°F). The Buttercrunch variety tends to thrive when used with LEDs. Indoors allows year-round cultivation irrespective of seasonal conditions.

Maximize your food production through strategic combinations of methods; such as: using cold frames, succession planting, hydroponics (for off-season gardening), and seasonal variety rotation. Starting small will give you the opportunity to build your confidence before expanding your garden to produce continuous harvests.
