Can pothos survive in low-light bathrooms?

Pothos plants are remarkably adaptable to bathrooms with limited light, although the growth rate is slower than in brighter locations. My pothos, which sits at the corner of my north-facing bathroom, has bounced back with weekly rotations and monthly feedings to support growth. While the leaves remain small, the humidity is very reminiscent of their tropical habitat typically resulting in decreased watering needs.

Benefits

  • High humidity reduces need for frequent watering
  • Tolerates fluorescent or artificial light sources
  • Purifies air in small, enclosed spaces

Challenges

  • Slower growth due to limited light
  • Risk of root rot from overwatering
  • Leaves may lose variegation patterns

Utilize well-draining soil to counteract bathroom humidity. I blend orchid bark into potting soil to create airflow and avoid soggy roots. Rotate plants weekly for even light on all foliage. If leaves start to yellow, use a small growth light for 4-6 hours a day.

Soil & Water

  • Use 1:1 potting soil and perlite
  • Water only when top 2 inches dry out
  • Avoid misting, leaves stay humid naturally

Light Solutions

  • Install LED strips under cabinets
  • Use reflective surfaces to bounce light
  • Clean leaves monthly for better absorption

My bathroom pothos, which I had designated as 'dark,' was able to survive for 18 months before I had to relocate it permanently. Although it did grow very slowly, the vines reached an eventual height of 3 feet. When caring for a pothos that is not variegated, like jade pothos, low light is best. I recommend keeping an eye on the color of the leaflets; if it is pale green, consider that your plant is going to need even more light.
