When prepared properly, artichokes can certainly be a safe treat to offer your dog on occasion. Cooked plain artichoke hearts contain both fiber and antioxidants, but always remove the tougher outer leaves and choke. Raw artichokes can cause choking due to their fibrous nature - steaming the artichoke and removing the leaves makes the vegetable safe for your dog to eat but still retains nutrient value.

Safe Preparation

  • Steam or boil hearts until fork-tender
  • Cool to room temperature before serving
  • Limit to 1-2 tablespoons per 20 lbs (9 kg) body weight

Foods to Avoid

  • Canned artichokes with added sodium
  • Marinated varieties containing garlic/onions
  • Raw leaves or tough stems

Canine digestion benefits from the prebiotic inulin found in artichokes when consumed moderately and in limited quantities. One of my clients who has a Labrador with chronic constipation reported better stool quality after feeding their dog one tablespoon of artichoke weekly for a month. It is important to always confirm with your veterinarian before introducing any new foods to your dog, as some dogs will have gas or loose stools when first introduced to new foods.

Dangerous additives can be more harmful than the artichokes themselves. Garlic butter dips can cause hemolytic anemia in animals. I have seen 3 cases of pancreatitis that were food-related to diners eating artichokes from a restaurant menu. I would never have an appetizer of artichokes to share if it contained oils, spices, or dairy, just a warning.

If you have a dog that can handle artichokes, you can mix some cooked hearts in his routine food. You can even puree the hearts with pumpkin or plain yogurt to give him extra nutrition. Animal care experts tell pet owners to monitor their pets for vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy. If you see any of these symptoms, stop giving your dog the artichokes and consult your vet as soon as you can.
