Most garden plants can be grown successfully in raised beds; however, they are not suitable for certain types of crops. Most shallow-rooted vegetables, including lettuce and radishes, thrive in 12 inches of soil or standard soil depths. Herbs and annual flowers are also very successful. By recognizing root systems, you can plan to accommodate their needs.

Deep-root crops require properly designed beds to thrive. Tomatoes and peppers require a soil depth of at least 18 inches (45 cm). Perennial crops, such as asparagus, need a soil depth of 24 inches (60 cm) for sustainability. Have a couple of deeper parts in your bed or create tiers to grow these crops effectively.

Ideal Plants

  • Lettuce (6-8 inch roots)
  • Spinach (shallow root system)
  • Radishes (compact root formation)
  • Strawberries (container-friendly)

Special Considerations

  • Carrots (need loose, deep soil)
  • Potatoes (require hilling space)
  • Raspberries (spreading runners need containment)
  • Artichokes (large perennial space requirements)

Based on horticultural best practices

Raising spreading plants with great designs. For mint and raspberries, use root barriers for heavier, wider beds that require more space for squash. Vertical supports keep vining crops contained. These arrangements make problematic plants work in raised beds.

Modify spacing between plants for production. Compact varieties, such as bush beans, are advantageous because they require less space. Succession planting will optimize total harvest for the season. I have also planted 'Paris Market' carrots in shallow beds and 'Patio' tomatoes in pots. The combinations, plus good care, increase my harvest.

Consider microclimate advantages when selecting plants. For crops that prefer warm temperatures, such as eggplants, raised beds will warm up more quickly. When growing cool-season crops, you can take advantage of them being planted a little earlier. By considering plant preferences in conjunction with your raised bed microclimate, you can enjoy the best growing conditions.
