Overview

Bald cypress is a tall, deciduous conifer from the swamps and river bottoms of the southeastern United States, and it has turned out to be one of the toughest trees a gardener can plant. It loses its needles every winter, which is where the bald in the name comes from. Few large trees ask for so little once they settle in.

Its reputation as a swamp tree sells it short. Bald cypress will stand in flooded ground for weeks, yet once established it handles drought, heavy clay, compacted earth, and the rough conditions of a city street just as well. That range is why you find it growing wild in a bayou and lining a downtown sidewalk with equal ease.

The look earns its keep through the year. Soft, feathery green needles carry the spring and summer, then turn a warm russet to copper-orange before they drop, leaving a clean pyramidal frame for winter. Grown in or near water, the roots send up woody knees that give the tree its unmistakable swamp-edge silhouette.

Care

The short version: full sun, acidic and ideally moist soil, and steady water until it roots in. After that bald cypress is hardy from zone 4 to 11, drought tolerant, and close to maintenance free.

Light

Give bald cypress full sun for the best shape and growth, though it will take partial shade without much complaint. The more sun it gets, the denser and more even the canopy fills in.

Water

It is about as adaptable to moisture as a tree can be, thriving in wet, swampy, even flooded ground while also growing well in ordinary or dry urban soil once rooted. Water young trees regularly until they establish, after which they handle drought on their own. In a hot, dry summer without irrigation, mites can brown the needles early.

Soil

Bald cypress prefers moist, acidic, sandy to loamy soil in the range of pH 4.5 to 6.5, but it tolerates clay, compaction, and poor drainage. Push the pH above about 7.5 and the foliage yellows with iron chlorosis, so keep it off strongly alkaline sites.

Temperature

This is a cold-hardy tree, taking winter lows near -29°F (-34°C) and summer heat up to 104°F (40°C) without harm. That range covers USDA zones 4 through 11.

Humidity

Outdoor humidity is never a concern for an established tree. Good airflow and adequate water matter far more, since dry, stagnant heat is what invites mites.

Feeding

An established bald cypress rarely needs feeding. Where growth is poor, a balanced slow-release tree fertilizer in spring helps, and on alkaline soil a dose of chelated iron or some acidification will clear up chlorosis.

Pruning

Plan on very little pruning. The tree builds a strong central leader on its own, so just remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter while it is dormant.

Repotting

Bald cypress is rarely a container plant and seldom needs repotting. Watch for roots circling or escaping the drainage holes, stunted new growth, or water running straight through the pot as a sign it has outgrown its space.

Troubleshooting

A healthy bald cypress rarely gives trouble, and most of what does come up is cosmetic. The few real issues show in the needles, where yellowing points to the soil and browning points to pests. Match what you see below before you reach for any treatment.

This is iron chlorosis, and it shows up when the soil is too alkaline for the tree to pull iron out of the ground. It almost always traces back to a pH above 7.5 or tight, compacted soil. Acidify the ground with elemental sulfur over time, treat with chelated iron for a faster fix, and mulch to build up the organic matter.

Bagworms cause the same early drop in patches, so look for spindle-shaped silk bags hanging from the twigs and pick them off; steady water through a drought is the best defense against both.

Toxicity

Good news for anyone with pets or young children: bald cypress is not toxic. It doesn't appear on the ASPCA or NC State Extension toxic-plant lists, and neither the soft needles nor the woody cones are known to poison animals or people. A stray nibble is nothing to worry about.

How to propagate

Bald cypress comes easily from seed but stubbornly from cuttings, which is why the named forms reach the nursery by a different route. Here is how each method actually works.

Myths

Myth

Bald cypress is just a dawn redwood and has to be planted in water to survive.

Reality

They are two different trees. Bald cypress carries its needles alternately in two ranks and can throw up woody knees, while dawn redwood sets its needles in opposite pairs and never does. Bald cypress does not need standing water at all, and it grows just as well in ordinary moist or even dry upland and city soils; the knees tend to appear only when it stands in or beside water.
