Why does basil wilt despite regular watering?

Basil roots can drown when overwatered when the soil is saturated with water, and when roots are compacted together in soil. I've saved many a plant by improving its drainage first; healthy basil requires both soil that can be aired out, as well as moisture.

Errors involving companion planting worsen wilting. For example, basil placed in the immediate area of water-lovers like cucumbers will often rot its roots. After losing 20 plants due to basil wilting, I redesigned my plan and now grow Basil with marigolds that not only deter pests but allow for airflow between plants too.
Drainage Fixes
- Install French drains in rainy regions
- Layer gravel under raised beds
- Use moisture meters for precision
Watering Techniques
- Water at dawn, not evening
- Use drip irrigation for consistency
- Reduce frequency when temps drop below 50°F (10°C)
Avoid future wilting with proactive management. Rotate your basil beds each year to avoid disease accumulation. Check the soil density before planting, if a fistful of soil holds together like clay, add amendments. My happy basil currently grows in a soil mixture that is 60% compost, and I monitor the soil moisture level each week.
