Typically, the basil you buy at your grocery store is stressed beyond belief, which creates multiple stressors before you purchase it. Grocery store basil has been grown in cramped root conditions, with poor light and water quality, on the retail floor before your purchase. I noticed this when I rescued some supermarket basil plants and solved the above issues just after placing them into my home.

Immediate repotting solves the most pressing issue. Carefully tease apart the root balls and place them into new containers filled with fresh, well-draining soil. I use a mix of 60% potting soil and 40% perlite for improved aeration. After repotting, water the plant thoroughly and keep it out of direct light for 48 hours.

Light adjustment must occur in moderation, from 6 hours of indirect light to 12 hours over four days. If you're going to leave the plants indoors permanently, use full-spectrum LEDs at a distance of 4-6 inches from the plant tops. My rescued basil thrived under 14-hour daily light cycles and consistent 70°F temperatures.

Prune back severely to reset growth habits. Cut the stems to 4 inches above the soil and remove all flowers. Drench the plant in diluted fish emulsion to help it recover. New growth from the leaf nodes will emerge in two weeks. Plants will now channel their growth energy into healthy foliage development.
