The composition of the soil can impact how well it retains water. To optimize drainage, consider adding perlite or coarse sand to your potting soil. You want to avoid using dense garden soil in containers. If you are caring for moisture-loving plants, you can use water-retaining crystals, but use them sparingly!
Environmental modifications minimize the hazard of overwatering; water early in the morning when temperatures are cooler. Reduce frequency when humid. Protect containers from hard rains. I use simple wooden plank covers during the rainy season when it rains.
