Prof. Samuel Fitzgerald, Ph.D.Although self-watering planters are touted as being convenient, they still need care and maintenance to make them work properly. You should periodically check the reservoirs and watering system to ensure they are functioning properly. Otherwise, neglecting these basic duties leads to clogs and unhealthy plants. I probably have a dozen of these containers and have developed a simple routine that takes only a little longer to complete, which helps me care for them quickly. While a self-watering container requires less frequent watering, a little care will help your plants thrive and grow all year.
Reservoir Management
- Clean reservoirs monthly using vinegar solutions to prevent algae growth
- Check overflow holes for blockages that cause waterlogging
- Inspect seals and covers for cracks compromising mosquito protection
- Scrub mineral deposits that accumulate at water lines regularly
Wick System Care
- Examine wicks quarterly for mineral buildup reducing capillary action
- Replace fabric wicks every 6 months as fibers break down
- Trim soil wicks touching reservoir water directly when roots encroach
- Ensure wicks maintain full contact between soil and water
Water & Soil Maintenance
- Refresh water every 10-14 days to prevent stagnation
- Replace soil completely each growing season
- Flush soil monthly to prevent salt accumulation
- Use filtered water to reduce mineral deposits in systems
Throughout the year, the seasonal care of plants varies widely. For example, summer generally means I need to replace the water more often due to evaporation rates. Over the winter months, after we get freezing temperatures, I am cautious to check the overflow hole. In the spring, I prepare to completely change the soil mix. I often write these updates down on my calendar as specific times for seasonal care.
Assist with preventative care to reduce common issues. As mineral build-up accumulates in your system, wicking efficiency is reduced, leading to dry spots on the soil. Stagnant water leads to mosquito and/or algae problems. Compacted soil also limits capillary action. Regular maintenance is the most effective way to address these issues before they become a problem for your plants.
Use the correct tools for good maintenance. Soft bottle brushes can help clean inside the corners of the reservoir nicely. Dental mirrors provide a clear view underneath the bottle or tank, allowing for easy identification of areas that may be difficult to see. Tweezers are useful for removing debris from overflow holes. Portable, inexpensive tools offer quick, thorough, and effective maintenance, making them easy to use in the field.
With proper upkeep, self-watering systems reward you with healthy plants. I notice the herbs growing stronger with regular attention. The veggies produce more abundantly. These simple habits take just minutes to do, yet will provide you with years of hassle-free gardening.
