What is the trick to growing celery?

Celery grown without constant moisture is bitter; celery grown in poor soil is flimsy; celery grown without good sun treatment is not worth the trouble of growing. One of the significant challenges that confounds many gardeners is how to grow celery that remains firm and not limp. It is so simple and easy that it is difficult!
Testing and Amendment
- Check pH using a soil test kit. Target 6.0-6.8 for optimal nutrient absorption
- Mix 3 inches (7.6 cm) of compost into topsoil. This boosts organic matter content
- Add sulfur if pH exceeds 7.0. Apply 1 lb per 100 sq ft (0.5kg/9.3m²)
Pre-Planting Treatment
- Till soil to 12 inch (30 cm) depth. Break up compacted layers
- Water beds thoroughly 48 hours before planting. Ensure even moisture penetration
- Apply balanced 5-5-5 fertilizer at 4 oz per sq yd (120g/m²)
Your aim should be for a damp sponge. Water 1-1.5 in (2.5-3.8 cm) every week in this weather. Mulching reduces evaporation. Use straw and or shredded leaves. Dig your finger in the soil. If it is dry to a depth of 2 inches (5cm), you should water.
Shade management protects celery in warmer regions. If daytime temperatures normally exceed 80°F (27°C), a 30% shade cloth should be placed over the crop during the afternoon hours of the day; otherwise, the crop is likely to bolt or become bitter. Morning sunshine is essential for proper photosynthesis. Shift the shade cloth as the season progresses.
Proper spacing ensures that your plants receive good air circulation. Space your plants 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) apart. Plant rows need 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) of gaps between them. Packing them in leads to fungal diseases. Thin out seedlings when they are quite young so that the young ones aren't strangling each other. Poor air circulation means more pests, so let a little air through.
