Ladybugs (Hippodamia convergens) are essential allies in the garden environment, consuming nearly 50 aphids a day! I released Fab SP for my roses, which were infested with aphids. In a few days, the ladybugs had removed all the pests... without resorting to any chemicals. These famous little beetles are also voracious predators of mites and scale insects in all life stages. They are highly adaptive predators and help regulate pests in a repeatable and convenient manner.

Lacewings (Chrysoperla carnea) are super helpful in controlling soft-bodied pests. Their larvae, known as aphid lions, are known for their quick destruction of whiteflies and thrips. I routinely plant dill and cosmos to attract them. Lacewings are delicate-looking insects that continually hunt during the warmer months, protecting plants such as vegetables like cucumbers and peppers.

Parasitic Wasps

  • Species: Aphidius colemani and Braconid wasps
  • Targets: Aphids and hornworms through egg parasitism
  • Release Timing: Early spring at 60°F+ temperatures
  • Habitat Tip: Grow yarrow and dill for attraction

Ground Beetles

  • Species: Pterostichus melanarius in North America
  • Targets: Slugs and cutworms during night hunts
  • Activity: Peak efficiency in moist conditions
  • Habitat Tip: Provide stone shelters near vegetables

Minute Pirate Bugs

  • Species: Orius insidiosus
  • Targets: Thrips spider mites and insect eggs
  • Efficacy: Up to 80% reduction in infestations
  • Habitat Tip: Plant alyssum borders for sustenance

Beneficial nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) target soil-dwelling pests out of sight. I used them specifically on carrot rust fly larvae. They are tiny worms that enter the pest and release bacteria that kill the grub within 48 hours. They are effective in moist soil with a temperature of over 55 degrees, and they should be applied in the spring.

This combination of insects provides a self-sustaining solution for pest management. First, establish native plants such as goldenrod, and then introduce purchased insects when populations are low. My garden is now balanced with little effort from me, and it shows the best solution is to let nature manage, provided you support it properly.
