Should cucumber leaves be pruned?

Leave the lower leaves (Fig. 190) on for a week or more, and then remove them; this promotes better air circulation and reduces the likelihood of mildew diseases. Never, however, remove upper leaves, as these are necessary to furnish the energy to build the fruit.
Early Growth Stage
- Pinch main stem after 7 leaves appear
- Remove only damaged or yellowing leaves
- Avoid pruning before flowering starts
Flowering Period
- Prune lower leaves below 12 inches
- Remove non-fruiting side shoots
- Preserve all flower-bearing stems
Fruiting Phase
- Weekly removal of older lower leaves
- Cut leaves touching soil immediately
- Never prune above developing fruits
Pruning technique. Proper pruning techniques do not cause stress to these plants. Use sharp bypass pruners that have been soaked with rubbing alcohol and make a clean cut just above the nodes from which leaves are being removed. Avoid cutting into the main stems of the plants. These plants are most hydrated and least likely to be shocked in the morning.
Identify non-productive growth to remove. Focus first on leaves with powdery mildew spots. Remove suckers emerging below the first fruit set. Retain all healthy leaves above developing cucumbers as they provide important shade.
Container plants require more attention than other forest trees. Their limited, restricted root space makes them more susceptible to pruning. Always remove clearly damaged leaves, but maintain at least 75% of the leaf area. This will allow for an adequate photosynthetic surface area to facilitate the production of fruit-bearing shoots.
Post-Pruning Care will facilitate recovery. Water thoroughly right after a pruning session. To lessen the impact of pruning, apply diluted seaweed extract. Observe the plants for 48 hours for any signs of wilting. If done properly, pruning will encourage and maintain lush growth throughout the growing season.
