Is overapplication of nematodes possible?

While applying too many nematodes is wasteful (but not harmful), the natural predators will not exceed the available pest hosts in the population. Any nematodes that exceed the target population die, resulting in no additional gain. I discovered this when I used double doses, and there was no difference in results compared to proper applications in my trials.

Dosage Calculation

  • Use 5 million nematodes per gallon for light infestations
  • Increase to 10 million per gallon for severe pest problems
  • Measure affected area precisely before mixing

Targeted Coverage

  • Focus on pest hotspots rather than entire gardens
  • Spot-treat affected plants with watering cans
  • Avoid spraying non-infested zones

Frequency Management

  • Apply every 4 weeks during active pest seasons
  • Monitor pest populations before reapplying
  • Reduce frequency during cooler months

Excessive application results in the loss of money without improving results. Nematodes require a living host to reproduce. Suffice to say, extras will starve to death within days. When tracking data, the actual pest reduction showed similar amounts regardless of whether it was standard or a 2x dose. Save your resources by being precise and applying monthly, rather than annually.

Pursue this economical method. First, identify pest hotspots using sticky traps. Then, calculate the square footage area that actually needs to be treated. Mix only the necessary nematodes. Apply them at dawn. Repeat monthly during periods of high peak activity. This approach saved me 60% in annual nematode costs while also delivering pest control.

When not using nematodes, store them properly in a refrigerator. Nematodes will last for four weeks at temperatures ranging from 38°F to 46°F. Do not freeze or expose to heat. I note the application date on every package to monitor freshness. After one month, discard any leftovers to ensure some effectiveness.
