Prof. Martin Thorne, Ph.D.Water Use.Water is essential. Through watering with generally one or one and a half gallons of water per plant once a week, in the form of deep, soaking sessions, you can encourage the roots to grow eighteen to twenty-four inches deep. With soil fairly moist, the plants will not suffer in a time of severe danger while the sprouts are developing. They will be firm and sweet.
Deep Watering Method
- Soak soil to 12-inch depth
- Use drip systems or soaker hoses
- Water at plant base avoiding foliage
Moisture Retention
- Apply 3-inch organic mulch layer
- Use water-retaining soil amendments
- Create soil basins around plants
Monitoring Systems
- Check soil moisture daily
- Use moisture meters at root zone
- Observe leaf turgor pressure
Soil moisture consistency, or "keep it even," avoids all types of plant problems. Keep the garden damp but never muddy. Test with your finger to a couple of inches down. A simple drip irrigation system distributes moisture evenly. Mulches of straw or shredded leaves cut down evaporation by one-third during hot spells.
Seasonal adjustments are meant to accommodate fluctuations in the weather. If summertime temperatures rise above 85°F, watering frequency should increase. Conversely, if cool, rainy conditions occur, watering should be reduced. If heavy rains are expected, consider using temporary covers to protect plants. These changes ensure that ideal moisture levels are maintained throughout the year.
Detect early signs of improper watering. Wilting typically indicates underwatering and requires immediate soaking. Yellow leaves indicate that the plant has been overwatered and needs to be drained more effectively. Cracked sprouts indicate irregular watering habits. All of these issues must be resolved within 48 hours to prevent damage.
Water affects nutrient absorption. Use rainwater (natural nitrogen) whenever possible. Let your tap water sit overnight to allow the chlorine to evaporate. Some well water has too many minerals; consult your local water department. Proper watering helps plants extract the necessary nutrients from the soil.
