Prof. Charles Hartman, Ph.D.Length of time required from germination to harvested bud is variable: certain early varieties, such as Emerald, will grow a harvestable bud in only 75 days after transplanting, while many of the older varieties require 100 days or more to reach harvest stage.
Variety Selection
- Early types: 75-85 days (Emerald, Imperial Star)
- Traditional types: 100-120 days (Green Globe, Violetto)
- Hybrids offer intermediate maturation periods
- Dwarf varieties mature faster in containers
Climate Influence
- Warmer zones accelerate growth by 10-15 days
- Cooler climates extend timelines significantly
- Soil temperatures below 60°F delay development
- Heat waves above 85°F can stunt bud formation
Vernalization Impact
- Proper cold treatment reduces time to harvest
- Incomplete vernalization adds 3-4 weeks
- Refrigerator method speeds results versus outdoor
- 10-14 day optimal chilling period
Care techniques to ensure that they grow as quickly as possible. The soil moisture should be maintained at approximately one to one and a half inches of water per week. Fertilize every four weeks using a 10-10-10 NPK now available in many brands. Protect them from attacking pests such as aphids. All these measures mean earlier crops.
A word about container gardening: Potted artichokes will normally take 7 to 10 more days to mature than in-ground. Use large containers, 15 gallons or more filled with quality soil. You'll need to add extra nutrients since they will be growing in a limited root space. But with this kind of gardening you have the flexibility to wait just a little longer.
