How do I choose soil when repotting succulents?

Prof. Samuel Fitzgerald, Ph.D.Selecting soil for succulent repotting depends on two big things: your plant type and your growing environment. If your succulent is a desert native, like a cactus, it needs completely different mixes than those discovered in tropical regions. Your climate conditions also dictate choices of soil ingredients. If you live in a dry area, you want ingredients that retain moisture. If you live in a humid area, you want to maximize drainage.
Desert Cacti Mix
- 3 parts mineral grit: pumice or granite
- 1 part organic matter: pine bark fines
- Add ½ part coarse sand for stability
Tropical Varieties Blend
- 1 part gritty material: perlite or lava rock
- 2 parts organic base: coco coir or compost
- Include charcoal for moisture balance
Hybrid Succulents Formula
- 2 parts mineral grit: mixed sizes
- 1 part organic matter: peat-free soil
- Add 1 tablespoon lime per gallon for pH
Before repotting, it's worth testing for drainage. Fill your new container with the mix. Pour half a cup of water through it. The amount of time it takes for water to stop dripping out of the drainage holes is the drainage time for each pot. You want drainage to occur within 10-15 seconds . If drainage is longer than this, add more mineral grit. If it drains quicker than this, add organic plant material.
Take the right measures to prepare plants for repotting. Gently remove the old soil without injuring your roots. Trim any decayed or dead roots with sterilized scissors. Allow plants to air dry for 24 hours before placing them in new soil. This prevents infection in fresh cuts. Place back in the same depth.
Steer clear of the pitfalls of repotting succulents! Do not use dirt from your garden, as it will contain pathogens. Save the moisture-retaining additives, such as vermiculite. Don't water after repotting; allow 5-7 days before watering. Always use a pot that is the appropriate size for your root mass. If you pot too big, that will retain too much water. Succulents thrive best when transitioning from one pot to another.
