Prof. Martin Thorne, Ph.D.Celery stalks regrow when harvested properly. These new shoots help with a continuous harvest throughout the growing season. Correctly cutting the stalks preserves and protects the central growth point while removing the outer stalks that are ready for harvest. With a little care-taking, your plants will continue to produce new shoots.
Harvest Technique
- Snap outer stalks at soil level using downward twist motion
- Leave 2-3 inner stalks and crown completely intact
- Avoid cutting tools that damage growth points
Aftercare Requirements
- Apply liquid seaweed fertilizer within 24 hours of harvest
- Maintain 1 inch (2.5 cm) daily water at roots
- Monitor for pest stress on fresh growth
The new growth will start from the centre within 5-7 days of being cut, with the little leaves appearing first, followed by a second, thicker stem. This growth will last for 2-3 weeks, depending on the conditions, and during that time, they should be kept well-watered and fertilized. The soil should be above 55°F. (13°C.) for fastest growth.
Optimize conditions for maximum regeneration. Provide balanced fertilizer every 14 days. Use compost tea for organic, 6 hours of sunlight. Protect plants from extreme heat with shade cloth. Rotate an area you are harvesting around that plant. This way, the plant is never stressed or tortured on that side.
Beware of broken stamina. Most plants run out of regrowth after 3-4 months. The crown woodifies. The stalk gets progressively thinner. If you've reached this point, ditch the plant and fill the garden with seedlings again. Scour the 'banker' plants or your best-established to the test plants and have first pick of the seeds.
This method of harvesting continuously requires less garden space. A single productive plant can sustain a family throughout the entire season. Give your neighbors extra stalks. Preserve any extras by freezing. Using these techniques, you can enjoy fresh celery flavor all year long by promoting regrowth.
