Do drainage rocks at pot bottoms help succulents?

Adding rocks to the bottom of pots creates a perched water table that holds moisture around succulent roots. At least once per month, check the drainage by timing how long it takes for water to flow out of the pots. Passive moisture control is essential for succulents.

Steer clear of commonplace drainage myths. Do not use gravel as a substitute for soil amendment to ensure proper drainage. Don't cover holes with plastic mesh - it'll clog. Understand that depth affects drainage more than width. Shallow pots handle the excess water better than deep pots. Your succulents will flourish with the water able to move freely.
