Do cuttings need special care after rooting?

Prof. Charles Hartman, Ph.D.The journey of growing from cuttings is not over once roots have developed. Inadequate care following root establishment may result in death or a drastically slowed growth time. I once killed a spider plant by moving it out of the humidity dome too quickly. Even with roots established, you must gradually acclimate the cuttings: fluctuations in humidity or light may stress the delicate roots. Cared for like seedlings - not mature plants - your cuttings can then thrive!
Week 1
- Day 1-3: Keep humidity dome on 18hr/day
- Day 4-7: Remove dome for 6hr increments
- Mist leaves if edges brown
Week 2
- Expose to morning sun (1hr max)
- Water when top 0.5" soil dries
- Rotate pot daily for even growth
Picking the right soil prevents the roots from suffocation. I lost multiple rosemary cuttings in dense garden soil until I added coarse sand. For herbs, mix in roughly 30% perlite. Houseplants need chunky orchid bark so roots don't suffocate. Always use room temperature water since cold water shocks the tender roots.
Common Errors
- Fertilizing too early - burns new roots
- Using oversized pots - retains excess moisture
- Ignoring pest checks - aphids target weak plants
After 30 days, you want to begin feeding.I like to use seaweed extract and dilute it to about 25% strength.Take photos to track growth - my mint doubled after I started feeding it proper nutrients. I like to plant extra cuttings and give them away to my neighbors. Sustainable garden supply works best when people share cuttings from their gardens with each other.
