Do blackberries need special soil preparation?

- Lower alkaline soil with elemental sulfur (1 lb/100 sq ft)
- Raise acidic soil with lime following package instructions
Soil Amendment
- Mix 4 inches of compost into top 12 inches of soil
- Add perlite to clay soils for better aeration
- Incorporate well-rotted manure for slow-release nutrients
Before planting, try solarization to kill weeds. Cover wet borders with clear plastic for 6 weeks during the hottest months of the year. This will raise the soil temperature to about 120°F, killing weed seeds and any pathogens in the soil. Solarization is a method for killing soil fumigants and herbicides.
Add organic matter such as composted manure or leaves. Use a broadfork to work the material 12 inches deep. This enhances soil structure and water retention. Organic matter nourishes important microorganisms essential to plant health.
Examine soil nutrient levels before planting. You may have samples sent to extension services for analysis. Address any deficiencies with the appropriate amendments, such as bone meal for phosphorus. Ensuring balanced nutrition will not only prevent bitterness in your berries but also improve yield.
Time preparation correctly starts 8 weeks before planting. This allows amendments to integrate and pH to stabilize. Proper timing ensures plants establish quickly in optimized soil conditions.
