Prof. Martin Thorne, Ph.D.Root rot spreads faster than most growers appreciate. On several occasions, I lost three healthy pothos plants because I placed them next to an infected monstera. Pathogens like Phytophthora, move through tiny soil particles, on tools, via water droplets, and through your gardening gloves.
Spread Vectors
- Pruning tools transfer 92% of pathogens between plants
- Water runoff carries spores to adjacent containers
- Reused potting soil retains active fungi for 18+ months
Sanitization Methods
- Soak tools in 10% bleach solution for 10 minutes
- Pressure-walk patios with 140°F (60°C) water after outbreaks
- Solarize contaminated soil at 158°F (70°C) for 30 minutes
Isolation Practices
- Quarantine new plants 14 days minimum
- Use separate watering cans for infected specimens
- Install physical barriers like plastic sheeting between pots
Sanitizing stations should be placed in high-risk areas. I have alcohol wipes by my potting bench and use 'clean' tools that have red handles. I've lost herb seedlings that were contaminated with scissors, and especially since then, I sterilize my scissors after each use. No exceptions, even when I'm doing a quick trim.
