Can root rot spread between plants?

Root rot spreads faster than most growers appreciate. On several occasions, I lost three healthy pothos plants because I placed them next to an infected monstera. Pathogens like Phytophthora, move through tiny soil particles, on tools, via water droplets, and through your gardening gloves.

Spread Vectors

  • Pruning tools transfer 92% of pathogens between plants
  • Water runoff carries spores to adjacent containers
  • Reused potting soil retains active fungi for 18+ months

Sanitization Methods

  • Soak tools in 10% bleach solution for 10 minutes
  • Pressure-walk patios with 140°F (60°C) water after outbreaks
  • Solarize contaminated soil at 158°F (70°C) for 30 minutes

Isolation Practices

  • Quarantine new plants 14 days minimum
  • Use separate watering cans for infected specimens
  • Install physical barriers like plastic sheeting between pots

Sanitizing stations should be placed in high-risk areas. I have alcohol wipes by my potting bench and use 'clean' tools that have red handles. I've lost herb seedlings that were contaminated with scissors, and especially since then, I sterilize my scissors after each use. No exceptions, even when I'm doing a quick trim.
