Can I use tap water when mixing nematodes?

Water quality is critical for beneficial nematodes to survive the mixing process. Tap water, which contains chlorine and a range of pH levels, is detrimental to these sensitive organisms. I found this out the hard way when my first batch of nematodes died due to untreated well water. Correct preparation of your water will enable your nematodes to remain viable for a longer period, facilitating effective pest control.

Chlorine Removal

  • Let tap water sit uncovered for 24 hours before use
  • Use activated carbon filters for immediate treatment
  • Avoid chemical dechlorinators containing ammonia derivatives

pH Adjustment

  • Test water with pH strips or digital meter
  • Add white vinegar drop by drop for high pH above 7.5
  • Use baking soda sparingly for acidic water below 6.0

Temperature Control

  • Bring water to room temperature 65-75°F (18-24°C)
  • Never use cold water below 55°F (13°C)
  • Avoid warm water exceeding 85°F (29°C)

Hard water presents unique challenges due to its high mineral content. Calcium and magnesium may impede nematode mobility. You can check hardness with aquarium testing strips. If the hardness is greater than 120 ppm, dilute my well water with 25% rainwater, or adjust with vinegar. I had to do this for every successful application!

For optimal mixing, follow these steps. First, prepare the water 24 hours in advance and ensure that the water temperature matches the room temperature conditions. Drop nematodes evenly over the water surface. Slowly stir in gently, using a whisk or a spoon. Do not shake vigorously! Apply nematodes immediately after mixing for best results.

Nematodes do not fare well in the wrong water. Even chlorinated water will render them non-infective in two hours. They rapidly disintegrate in high pH. Make sure to test the water you are dipping in before application. I keep records just like this to provide consistency season to season.
