Can compost solve all soil quality issues?

While compost greatly enhances soil health, it has clear limitations. It significantly improves soil structure and enhances nutrient availability. However, soils that are badly compacted require mechanical aeration to allow for sufficient root penetration. Soils that are highly acidic require liming. Sandy soils benefit from the addition of clay. Compost is most effective when used as a part of an overall soil improvement program.

Drainage problems may require engineering solutions. Compost assists recovery but is not the entire solution. Safety and effectiveness should be the main considerations in challenging circumstances.

Compost is too important to be ignored, despite drawbacks. It promotes the growth of microbes that make other amendments effective. It helps organic matter mix with lime and clay effectively. Compost should be included in all plans for improving soil. Just remember that other measures are also required to restore healthy soils.
