Numerous indoor horticulturists ask if fluorescent lighting actually works for plant fertilizer. The short answer reveals that it works in unexpected and useful ways. Many horticulturists use fluorescent lighting in beneficial ways. There are times when fluorescent lighting is superior to other types of lighting in certain instances. I have used fluorescent lights for many years and have had success with them.

Fluorescent systems yield their most impressive display with seedlings and greens. The blue spectrum wavelengths, ranging from 450 to 500nm, drive photosynthesis with high efficiency. Lettuce takes on its best colors with fluorescent lights, while basil and other herbs produce higher oil contents. There is a significant difference in the rate of growth of my kale under fluorescent light compared to the rate of growth of plants in the field.

Heat Management

  • Surface temperatures stay below 95°F (35°C)
  • Allows 2-6 inch placement without plant scorching
  • Reduces need for expensive cooling systems

Cost Efficiency

  • Initial setup costs 50-70% less than LED systems
  • Works with standard 120V household outlets
  • No electrical upgrades required for installation

Plant Compatibility

  • Ideal spectrum for leafy greens and herbs
  • Promotes compact growth in seedlings
  • Full maturity achievable for non-fruiting plants

Proper placement is everything. For strong stems, keep your lights 2-3 inches above seedlings. Move to 6-12 inches for your veg stages. Keep them 12-24 inches over mature plants. This prevents stretching while providing proper light penetration. I change it every week in my greenhouse.

It is reasonable to use energy if you practice smart approaches. Use the lights during off-peak hours to reduce utility costs. Consider using aluminum reflectors, which can increase efficiency by approximately 40%. When you group your highlight plants under your highlight fixtures, you can further maximize efficiency. With these approaches, I noticed substantial savings on my electric bill, reducing it significantly. You will see for yourself in the first growing season.
